CASE STUDY 03 ◦ A FIRST WEBSITE
LEONA
COOKIE CO
THE BRIEF
Britt bakes and hand-ices cookies in Surrey: wedding favours, christening sets, seasonal boxes painted with gold edges and pearl icing. Until this month the whole business lived on Instagram. Orders came in by direct message, there was no website to send people to, and no email address that wasn't a personal Gmail.
The ask, passed on by another client, was small: a holding page and a proper hello@ address to go with the new domain. There is no "before" to show here, because there was nothing before. So rather than a page that says "coming soon", we built the site that could start taking orders on day one.
WHAT WE DID
With no old site to react to, the brand came out of her photographs. Gold painted biscuit edges, pearl icing, dusted rose shading and scallop shells set the palette. The fluted edge of a cookie cutter is the one motif that repeats: it divides the sections and rims the plate the hero photo sits on. Her hand-drawn badge became the favicon and the footer mark.
- A wall of shapes instead of a stock photo. Twenty cookie outlines drawn as line art, with her real photographs dropped in among them. It says what she makes before a word is read.
- Four forms, one inbox. An enquiry form that takes reference photos, an email list, a pre-order list on a private link she sends to subscribers, and a contact form for order questions. Each arrives with its own subject line so she can tell them apart.
- Her FAQ, word for word. She had already written the answers to what people ask. They went in as she wrote them, as an accordion, rather than being rewritten into something blander.
- An allergens page in her words, not ours. Full ingredients with allergens in bold, all fourteen regulated allergens, and the colour warning the law requires. Nothing on it was paraphrased, because a tidier sentence about nuts is not worth the risk.
- [email protected], working both ways. The domain, the forwarding and the sending were set up alongside the site, so replies come from the business rather than a Gmail address.
- Room for the shop. The basket in the header and the seasonal boxes page are built for a Shopify Buy Button, so when she is ready to sell boxes online it drops in without touching the rest.
THE RESULT
A week after the first message, Leona Cookie Co has a home that isn't rented from Instagram: eight pages, her own address, and enquiries that arrive with the date, the quantity and a photo of the invitation attached.
Hosting costs her nothing a month. The only running cost is the domain renewal, and the site is hers to keep.
